Faculty invited to apply for humanities grants to support internships, research and travel

Ohio University humanities faculty are encouraged to apply by Sept. 15 for grants from the Central Region Humanities Center .

These grants are open to faculty and students in the humanities, which includes disciplines such as classics, English, languages, linguistics, history, philosophy, anthropology, religion, and art history. It also encompasses social sciences in areas that delve into the diverse heritage, traditions, and history of the human condition relative to today.

Student Internship and Experiential Learning Grants up to $1,000 are available to support Ohio University student internships or experiential learning experiences in Academic Year 2022-23.

Applications are sought from area public humanities institutions such as museums, libraries, and cultural sites as well as from Ohio University faculty members in humanities or humanities-related disciplines.

"Past examples that the center has funded included a Black history walking tour of Ohio University and its surrounding neighborhood and an oral history project about the spring 1970 protests at Ohio University over the war in Cambodia and the shootings at Kent State,"  Katherine Jellison , professor of history and director of the center, said.

Faculty and Graduate Student Research and Travel Grants up to $750 to support acquisition of research materials or research-related travel in Academic Year 2022-23.

Research projects must relate in some fashion to Ohio and/or one of the larger geographic regions of which it is a part of: e.g. the Ohio River Valley, the Great Lakes Region, the Old Northwest Territory, or the Midwest. Any Ohio University faculty member or graduate student in a humanities or humanities-related discipline is eligible to apply.

"Last year, for example, the center funded a faculty and student project involving Payne's Crossing , an African American settlement dating back to the 1800s," Jellison noted.

All applications are due Sept. 15, and the center's executive committee will begin evaluating applications immediately following that deadline with the goal of informing recipients no later than Sept. 30.
