Applications now being accepted for Community-Based Internships

OHIO’s Center for Campus and Community Engagement (CCCE) is seeking applicants for Community-Based Internships for Summer 2023.

This program connects students to nonprofit and public sector organizations to engage in mutually beneficial internships that provide students with high impact experiential learning opportunities and provide community partners with tangible outcomes that directly benefit the southeast Ohio region.

This year, the CCCE has partnered with regional nonprofit Rural Action to run the internships as AmeriCorps VISTA summer positions, providing participants with a living allowance, Segal Education Award, and a partial education award match from the Beth K. Stocker Fund.

“The Community-Based Internship program was piloted in 2019 with immense success for both the participating students and the community partners,” explained Mary Nally, director of the Center for Campus and Community Engagement. “Students gain hands-on experience and networking opportunities while the community partners benefit from capacity support, tangible results to address their priority issues, and a deeper relationship with the University.”

The Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia, The Mount Zion Black Cultural Center, Building Bridges to Careers, the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development, and the Survivor Advocacy Outreach Program are the participating community partners this year.

By interning with regional nonprofit partners, students are able to develop their professional skillsets as well as sense of belonging at Ohio University and in southeastern Ohio.

Allie Mancz, a member of the 2020 cohort stated, “Because this internship connected me with nonprofit and local government officials throughout the region, I now really feel a deeper sense of place as an Ohio University student, here in these forests and on these trails, as well as someone who’s invested in the well-being of our entire community. I came away from this internship with several new skills and personal fulfillment in feeling that I contributed to the common good of our area in giving back to the place that has really given me so much.”

Positions are 40-hours per week for ten weeks from May 15-July 23. All OHIO students who are U.S. citizens are eligible. Applications will be accepted through April 10, 2023.
