For the second consecutive year, Ohio University's Physician Assistant (PA) program has achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) . The 2024 graduating class excelled on the rigorous 300-question exam, further solidifying the program’s reputation for producing top-tier healthcare professionals.
“Our graduates' PANCE success is due to high standards, a rigorous curriculum, and quality clinical rotations,” said Melissa Bowlby, associate clinical professor and chair of the physician assistant program. “From admissions to frequent standardized testing and robust student support, every element contributes to excellence. Our dedicated faculty enhance learning through thoughtful course planning and delivery, helping students critically analyze and apply knowledge. Additionally, we offer numerous opportunities for standardized assessments throughout the program.”
The PANCE, administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), is required for certification to practice as a physician assistant. While the national first-time pass rate was 92% in 2023 , Ohio University's consecutive 100% pass rate highlights the program’s exceptional quality and dedication to student success.
“Several factors contribute to our success,” Bowlby explained. “First, our curriculum is crafted to be both efficient and well-structured, perfectly suited for the 27-month training period. The didactic year lays a solid foundation, enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills by immersing students in PANCE Content Blueprint material. This approach ensures our students meet our course and program goals. Equally important are our dedicated clinical preceptors, whose commitment during the clinical rotation year is crucial to our students' achievements.”
Bowlby also highlighted the program’s assessment strategy: “Secondly, we conduct frequent assessments, including board-style and programmatic evaluations, to monitor students' medical knowledge, clinical skills, and problem-solving abilities. We tailor study plans to address any specific areas where students need extra support. Additionally, many second-year assessments are standardized, PANCE-like exams to aid PANCE preparation.”
In addition to the academically challenging curriculum, Ohio University’s PA program emphasizes hands-on experience through extensive clinical rotations. Students rotate through various medical specialties, gaining exposure to diverse healthcare settings and real-world patient care. This holistic approach has been key in preparing students not only to pass the PANCE but also to thrive in their careers as physician assistants.
OHIO’s PA program was also ranked #1 in the state of Ohio by Nursingprocess.org in 2023. This recognition reflects the program’s overall excellence and its commitment to providing top-notch education and training for future healthcare professionals.
