In connection with OHIO’s policy to be smoke and tobacco-free as of 2015, we want to support those who would like to quit their tobacco use, or even want to learn about the strategies for quitting for when they are ready in the future.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can assist a person through the first few weeks or months of quitting tobacco use.
For OHIO Students
Many prescription drug benefit plans cover tobacco cessation products. Some of the common NRT options are listed below. Check with your insurance company for specific options available to you through your plan, copay/cost share, and maximum quantity allowed.
- Nicotine Transdermal (patch)
- Nicotine Polacrilex (gum/lozenges)
- Nicotine Nasal Spray (Nicotrol NS)
- Nicotine Inhaler (Nicotrol Inhaler)
- Buprioprion Generic (150 MG)
- Buproprion Brand (Zyban 150 MG)
- Varenilcine (Chantix)
Check with your prescription drug benefit plan to see if you will need a prescription for these to be covered, including the over the counter items, which can be obtained through a doctor visit or calling the doctor to request a prescription be sent to your preferred pharmacy.
For OHIO Employees
The university's prescription drug benefit plan covers the below tobacco cessation products. There will be $0 copay/cost share with a limit of a 168 day supply of each product in one year of treatment:
- Nicotine Transdermal (patch)
- Nicotine Polacrilex (gum/lozenges)
- Nicotine Nasal Spray (Nicotrol NS)
- Nicotine Inhaler (Nicotrol Inhaler)
- Buprioprion Generic (150 MG)
- Varenilcine (Chantix)
Faculty and staff will need a prescription for these to be covered, including the over the counter items, which can be obtained through a doctor visit or calling the doctor to request a prescription be sent to the employee's preferred pharmacy.

- For OHIO employees, tobacco quit resources are available on the web through the Employee Assistance Program. Visit the My Impact Solution website and then go to member log in. Click on CENTERS on the right hand side after logging in to find "The Quit Center." This resource can assist members on developing a personal plan. It also provides interactive tools, resources, and coaching.
