The English minor offers students a foundation in the history, conventions and practices of literature in English on which they can build a highly individualized area of focus. Students can choose to develop their creative writing, depth and breadth in literary reading, skills in composing for different rhetorical situations, or a combination of all three.
An emphasis on critical thinking and analytical or creative writing makes the English minor valuable for students who are pursuing majors in a variety of disciplines, including the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. In the age of generative AI, studying English prepares all students to thoughtfully evaluate and improve texts regardless of how they were written.
