Kids In College

For over 40 years, Ohio University Chillicothe has offered an opportunity for highly motivated students (Kindergarten through 8th grade) to reinforce the knowledge and instruction they received in school.

Kids in College is a summer enrichment program for students who are interested in the sciences, arts, languages, and history. This hands-on programming is staffed by a variety of enthusiastic, imaginative instructors, business owners, and college faculty.

The cost per class is $38. Some classes require additional material fees. Please check the class description for additional fees.

Registration will open on Monday, March 3.

Shirts can be purchased for $12. Shirt orders must be placed by May 23.

Course Schedule

Week 1: June 2 - 6, 2025

Morning Session: 9:15-11:15 am

Introduction to Emergency First Responders

This course will introduce students to emergency first responders (specifically law enforcement, fire and EMS) and outline the duties and operations (class age appropriate). The class will include organization structure, agency mission and goals, accountability to the communities they serve and operations, to include tabletop exercises. The class will also include a hands-on visit/demonstration by law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies. Tour an Ohio Highway Patrol helicopter on the final day.

Καλήμέρά!: Introduction to Ancient Greek

In this class, students will learn the basics of the ancient Greek language, including the alphabet, common vocabulary words, and basic sentence structure. They will also learn how to recognize some Greek roots in English words, which can be very helpful on the ACT/SAT. Students will also learn about Greek mythology, heroes, and scholars and can sample different traditional Greek foods.

Pickleball

Who wants to try Pickleball? This game is a thrilling combination of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, and it's sure to keep your kids engaged and entertained.  Please wear tennis shoes and bring a water bottle.

STEM Plus Art = STEAM through Literature

Through this hands-on, minds-on, highly-engaging course, students will explore many topics in STEAM through the lens of literature. We will be using children’s literature to build interest in experiments and activities that are sure to attract the young, curious mind.

Holidays around the World

In this class, students will learn about five holidays and how they are celebrated in America as well as other countries. Each day, we will make a craft, play a game, and assemble a tasty treat to represent the holiday while learning about the traditions associated with it. This year, the holidays will be Valentine’s Day (be sure to wear red or pink on the first day of class!), Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Sensory Art

Sensory Art is more than just painting and drawing—it’s about engaging all the senses in in a fun and creative process. From squishy textures to vibrant colors, this cool class incorporates a variety of materials and activities that stimulate sight, touch, smell, and even sound. These experiences encourage children to explore their creativity while also promoting sensory integration and fine motor skill development.

A Universe of Discovery

We find ourselves in a Universe containing hundreds of billions of galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars. We've observed everything from giant clouds of cold gas harboring stellar nurseries to the titanic explosions produced by the collisions of dead star cores. In this class we'll explore some of these discoveries, the tools and methods scientists use to make these discoveries, and how those same methods can be used to make new discoveries closer to home.

Manufacturing Accounting: Let’s Get to the Bottom Line

We will simulate a manufacturing environment in which you produce an item for sale, determine the associated cost, and set a selling price to make a profit. Each student will rotate through each of the three required roles: assembly, inventory control, accounting.

Stand-up Comedy for Kids

Are you funny? Do you want to learn about comedy? Then this class is for you! Work with stand-up comedian Lori Graves to learn how to construct and perform a three to five-minute comedy set that you will perform at the end of the week. Bring a notebook to each day.
