Debra M. Nickles teaches undergraduate English writing courses at Ohio University Chillicothe. In addition to those core classes, she lectures for the Women, Gender, and Sexualities Studies department in Athens. Debra is also the Director of the OUC Writing Center, a campus learning space known fondly as The Fishbowl. Here, she facilitates tutoring across the curriculum, develops writing workshops, and advises the student publication, Glass Enclosures. Debra keeps active in professional organizations, currently wrapping up a four-year presidential line as Past President of OCTELA, the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts. Her professional connections include ACUE (Association of College and University Educators), OCLCA (Ohio College Learning Center Association), CEAO (College English Association of Ohio), NWP (National Writing Project, through the Appalachian Writing Project in Athens), and the AAUW (American Association of University Women). Her primary publications include Unlearning: Challenging Assumptions about Women, Gender, and Sexuality, an eReader through Kendall Hunt Publishing with Dr. A Wallace as lead author, and a print-based course manual for Ohio University’s eCampus Humanities 2070: Great Books Ancient through Renaissance. Debra serves OUC in leadership roles and committee work including RHE At-Large Faculty Senator, OUC Recruitment and Retention Committee, Chair of the OUC Cultural Committee, and other appointed projects as they arise. She finds keeping students actively engaged in building new futures tremendously rewarding, and she looks forward to discovering new ways of contributing her talents and energies to the region.
