The 2021 COTS meeting will be conducted online via Zoom Webinar. COTS is free and open to the public.

Established in 1972 at Northern Illinois University by Dr. Clark D. Neher and Dr. Ladd Thomas, COTS was conceived as a kind of laboratory in which scholars, students and practitioners engaged in the study of Thailand could assemble to exchange ideas, share their research, and test the validity of their contentions and approaches to understanding Thailand.

Welcoming remarks:Dr. Neil Romanosky, Dean of University Libraries, and Dr. Patrick Barr-Melej, Professor of History and Interim Executive Director of the Center for International Studies.

The 2021 COTS conference keynote address, entitled “The Winds Above Suvarnabhumi: Airline Indigeneity in Mainland Southeast Asia,” will be delivered by Dr. Jane Ferguson, Senior Lecturer, Anthropology and Southeast Asian History, School of Culture, History & Language, Australia National University, and the 2022 Frances M. and Stephen H. Fuller Visiting Professor in Southeast Asian Studies, Ohio University.

During the 2021 COTS conference, hosted by Ohio University, nine students from different countries competed for the best student presentation awards. The selection committee, consisting of Dr. Taylor Easom, Dr. Kanjana Thepboriruk and Pittaya Paladroi-Shane, is delighted to announce the names of the winners and acknowledge their accomplishments. 

The first-place winner:  Nattapol Wisuttipat, University of California-Riverside Title of the presentation: Suay and Saep: Untangling Gender, Sexuality, and Queer Men Musicians in Thai Classical Music ($300)

The second-place winner: Chanakan Wittayasakpan, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand Title of the presentation: Extra-Thai-restrials: Exploring Alien Identities in Thai Science Fiction Novels ($200)
