Ohio University's Partnership with Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande (GSG) College
The Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande (GSG) College is a rural academic institution located in the town of Umarkhed in the Yavatmal District, a rural and underserved region of Maharashtra, India. The College is located near the natal village of Dr. Atmaram Gawande. Since 1985 Drs. Sushila and Atmaram Gawande, longtime active community members and physicians in Athens, Ohio have supported GSG college through funding and service.
Ram and Sushi Gawande formed the Student and Education Support Association (SESA) in 1992 with the goal of supporting education in their home communities in India and Southeast Ohio. The partnership between Ohio University and GSG College emerged from SESA's establishment of the Ram and Sushila Gawande India Endowment at Ohio University in 2012, which provides funding for an Ohio University faculty or student, on average one per year, to travel to GSG College to study, teach, conduct research, or provide services. After the Endowment was created, SESA facilitated a formal partnership between Ohio University and GSG College that was publicly announced in 2013. SESA has continued to liaison with the two institutions to stimulate and support mutually beneficial projects both within and beyond the Endowment.
