William Henry Scott Baccalaureate Sermons.
Scope and Content
The William Henry Scott (WHS) Baccalaureate Sermons span from 1874 to 1882 and contain sermons composed by WHS for commencement ceremonies. There is no sermon in the collection for the year 1880.
In the front of the Hollinger box in which the series was originally filed was a typewritten inventory on which was written, in pen, "Received from OSU ca. Sept. 98".
Folder One contains a 37-page, handwritten draft of the 1874 sermon originally titled, "The Limitations Upon Intellectual Attainments." The one-sided draft is on 7 ½" x 10" paper. The leaves are loose and the draft includes many cross-outs and revisions. The paper is discolored and the ink is faded, but the writing is quite legible. The condition of the paper with regard to aging in the remainder of the record series is generally the same. All drafts in the series are hand-written.
Folder Two contains a 7" x 8 1/2'", 44-page, two-sided revision of the 1874 sermon, retitled as, "Our Mental Limitations." The paper is two-hole punched and the pages fastened together with red string.
Folder Three contains a 35-page draft, with revisions, of the sermon, "The Race of Life" (1875) on 8" x 10" lined paper. The leaves are sewn at the spine.
Folder Four contains a 28-page, two-sided, much-revised, draft of the sermon, "Reason the Supreme Guide of Life" (1876). There is a single-page, tattered insert loose in the manuscript, which is sewn at the spine.
Folder Five contains a 24-page, two-sided, 8" x 10" draft of the sermon, "The Gift of Power" (1877), with revisions; sewn at the spine.
Folder Six contains a 41-page, two-sided draft, with revisions, on 7" x 9" paper, sewn at the spine, of the sermon, "The Life of Duty" (1878).
Folder Seven contains a 39-page, two-sided draft on 7" x 9" paper, sewn at the spine, of the sermon, "The Duty of Example" (1879). Inserted in the manuscript is a folded clipping ("The Independent") and a single 5" x 8" page of notes, handwritten in pencil.
Folder Eight contains a 36-page, two-sided, 7" x 8 ½" draft with commercially printed cover. The booklet is three-hole punched, but not fastened. The sermon (1881) is entitled, "The Antagonism Between the Self and the World" or "The Soul and the World." Inserted in the manuscript are many handwritten notes in pencil, on variously sized papers, as well as two printed (typeset) university-related announcements.
Folder Nine contains a one-sided, 23-page draft of the sermon, "Freedom by Knowledge of the Truth (1882). The 8" x 10" leaves are not bound.
