About this Event
Add to calendarThe event will begin with a short presentation on the full history of the outdoor recreation movement in America and how discriminatory policies and segregation helped create and perpetuate what is known as the “Adventure Gap”; a term coined by African American outdoor journalist James Mills, as a way to highlight the underrepresentation of BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) groups in outdoor recreational spaces. The participants will experience the outdoors as they hear stories of historical figures that have overcome the discriminatory barriers that denied access to outdoor recreation. Participants will discuss how individuals can help make the outdoors a more inclusive place in Athens city and beyond.
