The celebration of the 50-year friendship between Ohio University and Chubu University marks not just a milestone in time, but a testament to the transformative power of cross- cultural exchange. My initial encounters with the Chubu students were through the Conversation Partner Program, a gateway to unexpected friendships that would later become integral to my relationship with Chubu. The program introduced me to individuals I might not have otherwise engaged with.

Our shared experiences went beyond the academic sphere. While I originally connected within the program in order to better my Japanese, I formed true friendships that I hope to continue for years to come. Quite a few times, I would plan weekend outings to hang out with my conversation partners and friends from Chubu. We would go on trips to Kings Island, Cleveland, Columbus, and Hocking Hills. We would hang out during late-night volleyball matches in Ping, go ice skating, have girls’ nights, do late night study sessions, have movie nights and so much more which further showcases the depth and diversity of our connections. While each of these things felt so normal to me at the time, the Chubu students would time after time express how it was so American and how these normal things made them so happy.

These connections, formed during my time at Ohio University, persisted and flourished during my study abroad experience at Chubu University. Reconnecting with my past conversation partners, we embarked on adventures together, explored different parts of Japan, shared meals, and were able to reconnect as if we had never been separated after their program ended. Doing all these activities with them made me truly realize how much they enjoyed our time together in Ohio and how much it truly meant to them; I was able to experience reciprocated kindness tenfold in return.

Beyond the structured program, the intimate conversations that unfolded during late-night discussions with friends from both Japan and the U.S. stand out as memorable chapters in my journey. We delved into profound topics such as poverty, racism, educational disparities, misogyny, and cultural differences. Despite the linguistic challenges, these dialogues were engaging and illuminating, providing a window into the diverse perspectives that enriched our understanding of global issues. The weight of these discussions, though heavy, forged bonds that transcended cultural boundaries.

One key lesson from my time abroad is the significance of cultural sensitivity and open- mindedness. While embracing Japanese culture, I acknowledge moments where a deeper understanding of customs could have enhanced my interactions. This awareness fuels my commitment to engage more gracefully in cross-cultural interactions, pushing me to want to explore local communities beyond the university campus during future visits to Japan.

Looking ahead, the impact of these experiences on my personal and professional life is profound. The friendships cultivated during my international journey extend beyond geographical boundaries, enriching both my personal and professional networks. The exposure to diverse perspectives has ignited a passion for fostering cross-cultural understanding, shaping my future career aspirations.

As I fondly look back on the remarkable journey with Ohio University and Chubu University, I am grateful for the enduring impact it has had on my life. This celebration of friendship is not merely a reflection on the past; it is a commitment to the continued growth, connections, and transformative power that the future holds within this enduring partnership.
