The work of building a diverse and inclusive community is far more than a set of boxes to check or a series of events to attend. It happens in small steps and in big leaps, in one-on-one conversations and in large collaborative initiatives. To succeed, we must be both relentlessly intentional and open to the spontaneous opportunities for positive change.
Within that context, we base our inclusion work on one overarching Inclusive Excellence goalnot just for the Division of Diversity and Inclusion but for the University as a whole:
Be a University Where All Belong
It is a simple idea – one that is easy to understand and intrinsically linked to our mission. We know that students achieve greater personal and academic success when they are engaged, connected and supported. We know belonging strengthens mental and physical wellness and allows students to take on academic challenges with greater ease.
Achieving and sustaining that ideal state, however, is work that will never end.
2024-25 Strategic Initiatives
As we look ahead to the coming academic year, we have outlined three priorities in our pursuit of belonging.
-

- Enhance initiatives that build sense of belonging for communities across OHIO’s cultural, gender, sexual orientation, international, geographic, religious, physical, and cognitive diversity.
- Develop, strengthen, and promote opportunities that connect university community to the diversity of our local regions.
- Actively and intentionally engage OHIO’s regional and online communities in sense of belonging efforts
-

Connected to our Mission, Informed through Stakeholder Input
Our goal of achieving belonging for all connects to our new Ohio University Mission Statement , approved by the Ohio University Board of Trustees in June 2024. If we are to “hold the door open so that all… may enter to learn,” then we must be a University that welcomes students of all backgrounds and ensures they have the support needed to thrive.
This goal was also informed through input gathered during a 2022-23 audit of our campus climate, operations and resources through an inclusive excellence lens, conducted by an outside consultant. The audit resulted in five overarching recommendations that have been incorporated into our Inclusive Excellence goals.
