Awards for Excellence in Global Engagement celebrate the exceptional efforts of Ohio University faculty and staff in advancing the institution's commitment to global learning, research, and community-building. These awards honor individuals whose contributions reflect OHIO’s mission to foster inclusive, transformative experiences and its vision to drive knowledge creation and global impact. Aligned with the university’s Dynamic Strategy of academic excellence and leadership, the awards recognize those who empower diverse perspectives, cultivate a welcoming atmosphere, and enhance global interconnectedness.

Four Nomination Categories

Nominations are sought in four key categories that reflect Ohio University’s commitment to global engagement:

1. Global Learning

This category acknowledges faculty and staff who create outstanding learning experiences that promote global awareness, cultural competence, and the development of students as global citizens. Their work reflects OHIO’s mission to deliver transformative education that equips students with the skills to succeed in a globally connected world.

2. Global Discovery

Recognizing innovative research, scholarship, and creative activities with significant global or international impact, this category highlights those advancing knowledge that addresses global challenges or enhances understanding across borders. Their contributions reflect OHIO’s vision of becoming a leader in knowledge creation with a global reach.

3. Global Engagement

Celebrating efforts that promote global partnerships, international collaborations, or public engagement, this category emphasizes work that expands Ohio University's influence and relationships worldwide. These contributions align with OHIO’s dynamic strategy of extending its impact through outreach and collaboration beyond the campus.

4. Global Community

This category honors those who contribute to building an inclusive, welcoming environment for individuals understanding, foster diversity, and build a sense of belonging at Ohio University, reflecting the university's core from diverse international backgrounds. Their initiatives enhance cultural values of inclusion and engagement.

  • Deadline

    Completed nominations with all supporting documentation must be submitted by October 27, 11:59 p.m.

  • Selection

    All nominations will be reviewed by the selection committee, which will include faculty, staff and the Associate Provost for Global Affairs.

  • Recognition

    The recipients of the OHIO Global Engagement Awards will be recognized at the International Education Week Gala on November 18. Annually, one recipient in each category will receive a cash award of $500.

Eligibility

Nominees for all awards must be current, full- or part-time faculty (tenure-track or instructional) or current, full- or part-time staff (either classified or administrators).

Nomination Procedures

To nominate a faculty or staff member, the following materials are required:

  1. The nominee’s current curriculum vitae (CV).
  2. Nomination letter from OHIO faculty, staff, students, or alumni. Only one letter can be submitted per nominee. Letters can be co-authored. Nominations should be submitted by email to globalaffairs@ohio.edu . The nomination letter should include specific examples of the nominee’s excellence within the category of nomination, such as: 
    1. Global Learning:
      1. Detailed examples of how the nominee has incorporated global perspectives into their curriculum, teaching, or mentorship.
      2. Descriptions of innovative teaching methods or programs that promote intercultural competence and prepare students for global citizenship.
      3. Evidence of measurable impact on student learning outcomes, such as course feedback, student testimonials, or data on student success in international contexts.
    2. Global Discovery
      1. Descriptions of research, scholarship, or creative projects with a significant global or international component, including collaborations with international partners or institutions.
      2. Evidence of the impact of the nominee’s research on global issues, such as publications in international journals, presentations at global conferences, or recognition by international organizations.
      3. Outcomes that address global challenges (e.g., environmental sustainability, global health, social justice) and how this work aligns with OHIO’s vision of contributing to global knowledge.
    3. Global Engagement
      1. Examples of partnerships or collaborations with international organizations, universities, or communities that have advanced OHIO’s global presence.
      2. Demonstrable outcomes from these initiatives, such as new exchange programs, joint research projects, or international outreach efforts that benefit both OHIO and the global community.
      3. Testimonies or endorsements from international partners, highlighting the nominee’s role in fostering long-lasting, meaningful global relationships.
    4. Global Community
      1. Specific examples of the nominee’s efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for international students, faculty, and staff (e.g., mentorship programs, cultural events, support services).
      2. Evidence of leadership in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially through initiatives that engage and support individuals from various cultural and national backgrounds.
      3. Quantitative and qualitative impact, such as testimonials from international students, faculty, or staff about how the nominee’s work has improved their experience at OHIO.
