Graduate Admission Requirements for Philosophy

Application Fee Waivers Available

The application fees range between $50 to $55 (See Graduate Admissions ). If these fees would prevent you from applying and you would like to be considered for a fee waiver, please contact the Graduate Chair, Dr. Scott Carson , before applying.

Admissions Requirements | No GRE Required

All graduate applications must be submitted electronically through the Graduate College.

  • Applications, along with official transcripts, should be submitted to Graduate College. Note: GRE scores are not required.
  • A bachelor's degreewith minimum grade point average (GPA) 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Core undergraduate coursework:It is expected that students have taken at least 21 semester hours in philosophy. Students who have not had a course each in value theory, symbolic (predicate) logic, ancient philosophy, and modern philosophy must take courses in these areas during the first year in residence or as soon as possible.
  • Three letters of reference. These letters should both address your past performance and assess your potential for success at graduate study in philosophy.
  • A sample of original philosophical writingshould be submitted with the application.
  • A statement of purpose.
  • English Proficiency. International students whose native language is not English also must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic). To be considered official, test scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to Ohio University. A TOEFL-iBT of 80 or IELTS of 6.5 across all bands is required, along with written documentation of English speaking ability from a faculty who has spoken with the applicant by telephone or in person. Application Deadline
