Exposures and touchstones: Athens from behind a camera

“OHIO Photo Renga” unfolds as a series of interrelated portraits of Athens, Ohio, the campus and/or the city. This six-part photo essay is inspired by the ancient Japanese linked verse, renga, in which two or more poets alternate penning sections of a poem.

In hindsight, it maybe wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had to try to write about Ohio University’s Marching 110. My personal experience with the topic—I was in the band’s flag section from 1990 to ’93—makes it an easy topic to report on; but, being so close to the material makes objectivity challenging.

The name Jerry Sloan echoes throughout the hallways of Ohio University. A 1959 graduate of the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, Sloan taught in the E. W. Bobcat breakthrough in hepatitis C treatment

Forty-eight weeks is a long time to endure a physically punishing treatment with only a 40 percent success rate. This was the reality for patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV). President and CEO of Achillion Pharmaceuticals and Ohio University alumnus Milind Deshpande, PHD ’87, was determined to create a drug with better outcomes, one that could cut the treatment time and intense side effects experienced by patients.

OHIO nurtures student ideas during annual innovation contests

Four Ohio University students—all from outside the U.S.— won the University’s internal Scripps Innovation Challenge Pitch Day in March and then the broader Scripps International Innovators Cup in April for their solution to the problem.
