Black Lives Matter + Pedagogy: A discussion on anti-racist pedagogy in international/global education

CIS faculty and affiliates will share their approaches to integrating questions of race and ethnicity in their courses, with focus on such areas as methodology, student projects, readings, and in-class discussion.

Black Lives Matter from Global Perspectives and In Global Contexts

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, a panel of international scholars discussed BLM as a transnational phenomenon from comparative perspectives, with focus on continental and national/regional manifestations of BLM awareness and solidarity. A Q&A with the audience followed.

Panelists included:

  • Dr. Agya Boakye-Boaten, Associate Professor of Africana Studies and Director of Interdisciplinary, International, & Africana Studies Programs at UNC-Asheville 
  • Dr. Danai Mupotsa, Senior Lecturer in African Literature at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • Dr. Sueann Caulfield, Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan.

Workshop on “Becoming an Anti-Racist Language Educator”

CIS’s World Languages Program, which is coordinated by Dr. Pittaya Paladroi-Shane, hosted the workshop, “Becoming an Anti-Racist Language Educator,” as part of the Center’s Black Lives Matter and Global Racial Justice initiative. It was held via Zoom and was facilitated by Dr. Gyanam Mahajan, co-director of the Excellence in Pedagogy and Innovative Classroom program, SEA language coordinator, and teacher of Hindi-Urdu at UCLA.  The two-hour workshop focused on helping world-language educators develop a better understanding of the causes, manifestations, and implications of the BLM movement, and engage in a conversation on anti-racist propositions and approaches in their teaching. Participants connected with peers in small-group discussions, exploring ideas regarding the building allyship and forging positive action.

To launch the BLM and Global Racial Justice initiative, on November 9, 2020, CIS hosted a roundtable conversation and online-audience Q&A about the Center’s position paper. The discussion featured the following guests:

  • Dr. Akil Houston, Associate Professor of Cultural and Media Studies, Department of African American Studies
  • Dr. Robin Muhammad, Associate Professor of African American Studies and Chair of the Faculty Senate
