Dr. Joanna Mitchell is Director of Latin American Studies and Associate Professor of Instruction of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages. She received her B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany and her M.A. in Spanish and her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Rochester. 

Dr. Mitchell focuses on literary and cultural studies of Latin America, with an emphasis on autobiography and autoethnography in Mexican and U.S. Latinx communities. Her articles exploring topics such as women writers’ incursions in the national narrative of Mexico, embodied Latina performance in Chicago, and Jewish experiences inscribed in the streets of Mexico City have been published in a variety of academic journals. Her enduring interest in stories of immigration and migrant communities is inspired and informed by her own outreach and activism in those areas.
