The case study method of teaching and learning is an active approach to learning that simulates real world situations using scenarios. Cases require students to make decision about complex questions and issues based on given and implied information about a situation. Although case method learning outcomes typically focus on cognitive learning outcomes, case-based teaching provides opportunities for students to achieve affective learning outcomes as well. Grounded in the Affective Domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy, this workshop will provide instructors with tools and techniques to use the case study method of teaching and learning to transform student attitudes and values.

Learning Outcomes : After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the benefits and limitations of the case study method of teaching and learning.
  • Recognize the categories and levels of the Affective Domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
  • Identify select affective learning concepts.
  • Write affective-focused learning outcomes for cases.
  • Describe the importance of affective development to students.

Presenter Information:  Katie Hartman is the Vice Provost for Faculty Development and a Professor of Marketing. She has been using the case study method of teaching and learning in different contexts for more than a decade. Since 2017, she has co-authored five invited, peer-reviewed brief cases available through Harvard Business Publishing (HBP). She has also written more than a dozen invited cases for regional and national student competitions. Katie currently serves as a member of HBP’s Educator Advisory Team and as a trustee for the Pi Sigma Epsilon National Educational Foundation.
