About

Our Mission

Together, the TEA lab engages in qualitative and quantitative research centered on understanding perceptions and experiences of addiction with an aim to improve diagnosis, classification, and access to evidence-based care, as well as reduce health disparities. Specifically, we focus on understanding behavioral addictions, particularly Gambling Disorder, and harm reduction treatment methods. As a crucial aspect of this work, the TEA lab pays particular attention to aspects of diversity that impact perceptions and experiences of addictions. Relatedly, we believe in the importance of accessibility of science and are committed to engaging in open science practices.

Our Values

The TEA lab core values include: 1) respect for others, 2) open-mindedness, 3) care for the whole person, 4) independence, and 5) work-life balance. These core values guide our research and how we work together. More specifically:

  1. Respect for othersmeans respecting all individuals we interact with, including their unique, intersecting identities, cultures, and experiences. We value the dignity of each person we interact with and aim to promote the well-being of all.
  2. Open-mindednessmeans being aware of ourselves and others, in terms of our experiences, needs, perceptions, etc. Therefore, this value guides our engagement in self-reflection and commitment to open feedback.
  3. Care for the whole personmeans being aware of the needs of individuals outside of just one area, including addictions. For example, this may include attending and responding to the diverse needs of the communities with whom we work and being aware of the needs of each other outside the lab (e.g., family, health, etc.).
  4. Independencemeans taking initiative, problem solving when needed, and being responsible for your own actions. This can include things like asking for help when needed, being aware of your own responsibilities, and helping others to grow in their independence (whether that is a community with whom we work or individuals in the lab).
  5. Work-life balancemeans ensuring that we are engaging in rest and life-giving activities (both during and outside of work). We work better when we feel fulfilled and have rested appropriately, so we support each other in engaging in these activities and advocate for this for all those with whom we work.
