The Diabetes Institute (DI) is committed to diabetes research, scholarship and creative works and activities. The DI has four strategic research focus areas: Disease Mechanisms (Inflammation, Autoimmune and Metabolic Dysfunction); Interprofessional Healthcare Team (Education, technology, and health care delivery systems to train and support); Patient and Population Health (Prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes in underserved populations), and Drug Discovery. The Growth and Enrichment Program and the Pilot and Feasibility Program will support research in the above focus areas.
Funding received from all intramural sources (including the Office of Research and Grants, Vice President for Research, and departmental), or extramural sources will be taken into consideration when making the decisions to support any application.
How to Apply
Please read the program guidelines and application document carefully. Proposals must include all components in the application document. Incomplete proposals or those that do not follow the guidelines outlined in the program guidelines and application document will be withdrawn from funding consideration.

Diabetes Institute Growth and Enrichment Program (G&E)
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The goal of this program is to support research that is required to refine the preliminary data in proposals previously submitted and reviewed by external funding agencies. The DI G&E Program was established from research incentive funds generated by investigator members who submit and receive extramural grants through the DI. Funding is competitive and limited to $5,000 with funding cycles limited to 12 months.
Funding awards under the DI G&E Program are for investigator members who plan to re-submit a grant that was reviewed by an external funding agency within the last 12 months. Once funding is received through this internal mechanism, the grant must be re-submitted to an external agency, through the Diabetes Institute.
ELIGIBILITY
- Must be an Investigator Member of the DI.
- Priority will be placed on members who have received external funding submitted through the DI.
- Grant previously submitted and reviewed by external funding agency.
- External grant must have a minimum award of $100,000 to be considered.
DEADLINE: Proposals will be accepted when a call for proposals has been issued by the Diabetes Institute. In addition to the application submission, applicants will be required to defend their project to a review committee. Deadline for submission will be October 15 annually.
Diabetes Institute Pilot and Feasibility Program (P&F)
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The goal of this program is to support new research by DI members and broaden the network of DI membership. The DI Pilot and Feasibility Program has been established from research incentive funds generated by investigator members who submit and receive extramural grants through the DI. Funding is competitive and limited to $7,500. The funding cycles will be limited to 12 months for this program.
Preferred activities for funding under the P&F Program include but are not limited to:
- Development of new “spinoff” ideas from existing funded projects
- New, novel research projects in theme areas
- Generate new data in support of a specific grant application or manuscript
ELIGIBILITY
- Must be a member of the DI at the time of application and become an investigator member within 5 years.
- Open to new and established members
- Priority will be placed on new members of the DI, and those with new ideas aligning with the DI focus areas.

Diabetes Institute Publication Support
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The DI Publication Support program will help fund Members by defraying publication costs as they disseminate their research findings. Awards are up to $500 each and will support two publications per year, per member.
ELIGIBILITY
- Must be an Member of the DI.
- First or senior author on the manuscript.
- Manuscript must be within our research themes of focus.

Diabetes Institute Grant Review Support
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
To strengthen extramural grants to be submitted through the DI, the Grant Review Program will pay up to $300 per grant for review by professional science writers or consultants.

- Must be a Member of the DI.
- Priority will be placed on members who are engaged in mentorship

Diabetes Institute "Other" Support
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
All other requests for support that do not fit any of the specific programs listed above are invited to apply under “other” support. Please be advised that the Diabetes Institute Research Incentive Program is supported by our Research Incentives (RI). A portion of the recovered Facilities & Administrative Costs (indirect costs) is allocated to the institute to support research. All requests made as “Other” Support will be reviewed and awarded based on the availability of funds.
ELIGIBILITY
- Must be a Member of the DI.
- Priority will be placed on members who are actively engaged with the DI through research, educational, clinical, and/or outreach activities.
