Ohio-Leipzig Double Master's Program Specific Requirements

Double Master's Program: Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Chemistry and Biotechnology (Leipzig University) and Master of Science (M.S.) in Chemistry (Ohio University)

The 16 to 18 months before the defense of the masters thesis are typically organized as outlined below (see also Graduate Requirements for policies and expectations):

  • First Summer Semester (May to August): The student works on a joint research project at Ohio University, and enrolls for a minimum of 1 credit. The Double Masters degree candidate's thesis research project is supervised jointly by the student's research adviser at Ohio University, and the student's research adviser at Leipzig University.
  • Fall Semester (August to December): The student registers for three graduate classes (selected by both Ohio and Leipzig advisers to satisfy the M.S. and M.Sc. degree requirements), one seminar, and works on thesis research project at Ohio University, for a total of 18 credits.
  • March: The student works on research project at Leipzig University and may have option to attend German Language classes depending on availability.
  • April to July: The student attends classes at Leipzig University (delivered in English; classes are selected by both Ohio and Leipzig advisers to satisfy the M.S. and M.Sc. degree requirements), and works on thesis research project. The combined coursework and research experience in Leipzig translates into 12 Ohio University credits.
  • Second Summer Semester (August to defense): the student completes thesis research project, writes thesis, and proceeds to defense. Students must satisfy the thesis submission and defense requirements for both universities and enroll for a minimum of 1 credit in the semester in which they defend.

The student enrolled in the program must earn at least 50 percent of their credits at Ohio University. The administrative details of this program are as articulated in the Cooperation Agreement between Ohio University and the University of Leipzig.
