Room Selection Processes

The room selection process is set up in two distinctly different processes. There will be an earlier selection for students interested in specialized housing like Gender Inclusive Housing, Experiential Living Opportunities (i.e. Fine Arts, Honors Halls, Substance Free, Women's Leadership, etc.), and triple room options.

The General Room Selection Process will be the process in which most first year students will select. Each student will receive a scheduled date/time during which they can select a room.

Specialized Room Selections

Some halls/rooms may have restrictions due to 2024-25 hall configurations that will be communicated to residents.

Students wishing to be the roommate of a person who is returning to their same living opportunity, upperclass, or triple room selections can also be "pulled into" the room during this selection process. However, each student affected by this housing selection must be listed as a mutual roommate(s) prior to the selection occurring as well as completed their contract and $200 deposit/prepaymen t.

Gender Inclusive Housing Room Selection

The Gender Inclusive Housing Selection Process will be the process in which anyone who has opted into gender inclusive housing on their  Housing Self-Service  personal preferences. Each student will receive a scheduled date/time during which they can select a room.

If you wish to participate in Gender Inclusive Housing options, you will need to ensure that you update your ‘Personal Information’ page to reflect that information no later than Monday, May 6 at 8 a.m. If you update your ELO preferences between May 6 and May 15, email  housing@ohio.edu to be manually added to the Gender Inclusive Housing room selection process.

Experiential Living Opportunities Room Selection

The  Experiential Living Opportunities  Selection Process is for those students who have elected or been selected to be a part of an experiential living opportunity on campus.  These selection processes include Honors, 1804 Scholars, Fine Arts, Substance Free, Women's Leadership, LINKS, etc. Each student will receive a scheduled date/time during which they can select a room.

If you wish to participate in Substance Free or Women's Leadership housing options, you will need to ensure that you update your ‘Personal Information’ page to reflect that information no later than Monday, May 6 at 8 a.m. If you update your ELO preferences between May 6 and May 15, email  housing@ohio.edu to be manually added to the Women's Leadership or Substance Free room selection processes. If you are a part of other groups like Honors, 1804 Scholars, Fine Arts and LINKS your participation in the program will be communicated to Housing by your program coordinator.

Triple Room Selection Process

Housing and Residence Life is excited to offer an early selection process for students who are within a matched group of three to select into triple rooms.

If you wish to participate, you will need to ensure that you are within a fully matched group of three students. If you wish to participate, you will need to be in a fully matched group of three no later than  Monday, May 6 at 8 a.m. If you match in a group of three between May 6 and May 15, email  housing@ohio.edu to be manually added to the Triple Room Selection process.

If you do not elect to participate in the First Year Student Triple Room Selection Process, you will be eligible to select at your designated time during the First Year Room Selection Process that will take place between May 20 and 23. If you choose to not select a triple during the First Year Student Triple Room Selection Process, your current matched group of three may need to consider a different option due to the limited number of triples available during the general section process.

General Room Selection Process

Times and dates for selection in the general process are emailed and viewable on the  Housing Self-Service  the second week of May. The campus wide room selection process will be held on May 20-23 and will be available only to those students who have met the contract and deposit payment deadline.

Students who did not meet the May 1 contract/deposit deadline will be assigned a room by Housing and Residence Life Staff, but can be pulled into a room during room selection by a matched roommate if both students are matched before a room selection is made.

Selecting A Space

Now that you have all the details on what processes are available, it is time to review how to select your space when the time comes. Below is a tutorial video on the process,

as well as step by step instructions below it. If you have any questions on the process, reach out to our office so we can best support you.

Step 1

Be prepared on your assigned date and time to select your room. You can find your selection date and time on your  Housing Self-Service  page starting the second week of May.

Be aware that on your Housing Self-Service page will have two times displayed: the start time of the selection process and your specific date and time that you are able to select a room! Please read information carefully.

Once your specific selection time begins, you can select a space from that time until the end of the room selection process (time posted on the  Housing Self-Service  page). You may only select once during selection.

Step 2

Visit  Housing Self-Service  to make your selection when your selection time begins. The Room Selection section can be accessed by selecting the 'room selection' tab located on the left side of the screen. Detailed instructions for selection will be found in  Housing Self-Service  during the selection process.

Tips for Preparing for Room Selection

As you prepare for room selection, there are some additional proactive steps you can do to ensure a smooth process.

  • Know your OHIO email address and password
  • Ensure that you and your roommates are all mutually matched
  • Review all green, building, and room options that you are interested in and have several alternative selections in mind so that you have several back up plans.
  • Make sure that all roommates meet the criteria required for a particular building (i.e., required scholarship for the hall, etc.).
  • Match with all roommates prior to selecting a space so that they will all be successfully "pulled in". If a requested student has not confirmed they are in the roommate group, this will show in the roommate tab of your Housing Self-Service page. Check this prior to selection starting so you have time to follow up with any desired roommates.

Once You Have Made Your Selection

After you have completed your room selection, the assignment will appear on your  Housing Self-Service  overview page with your roommate information. In addition, a confirmation email containing your hall and room assignment will be sent to your OHIO email account within one day of your room selection date. Keep this email for your records.
