Relocate to Athens Campus

Relocate Steps

Students currently enrolled at one of Ohio University’s regional campuses, who wish to begin taking classes on the Athens campus, should follow these instructions. Students are required to reside on campus if the student will have less than four semesters of attendance at a higher education institution after high school graduation.

All students relocating to the Athens campus from a regional campus must complete the Notice of Relocation to Athens Campus form.

Housing Guidelines

Ohio University requires that all first-year and second-year students reside on campus and participate in a meal plan for four academic year semesters (fall/spring/fall/spring semesters) after high school graduation. In most cases this period comprises the first and second years at OHIO. Consideration for housing exemption is given for those relocating students who can demonstrate two full years attending an accredited institution of higher education after high school graduation*. Students wishing to be exempted from university housing and/or meal plan must submit a Housing Exemption / Termination Request Form for review and approval.

*Credit will not be given for college study completed while attending high school (via advanced placement, House Bill 140, etc.) towards exemption eligibility from the housing requirement .

Completing an exemption form does not automatically exempt the student from housing. The approval process may take up to 4-6 weeks to complete. The student will be notified of their exemption status via their OHIO email after all documents are reviewed.

Housing Contract and Payment

If it is determined that you are required to live on campus, you will need to visit your  Housing Self-Service page to fill out your housing contract and pay the required $200 housing deposit. The deposit is refundable by notifying Housing & Residence Life in writing to housing@ohio.edu prior to May 1 for fall semester and December 1 for spring semester.

Still Have Questions?

Am I a relocate student?

Students currently enrolled at one of Ohio University’s regional campuses who wish to begin taking classes on the Athens campus are considered “relocate students.” However, students must have earned a GPA of 2.0 or above to be eligible for relocation. A request for relocation can occur any semester in accordance with the Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog . Students relocating from a regional campus to Athens campus should complete an Intent to Relocate form . Once completed, your account will be reviewed to determine housing requirements. Students required to reside on campus will receive instructions from Housing and Residence Life regarding the process for completing a housing contract and selecting a room.

Am I required to reside on campus?

Relocate students under the age of 23 who cannot demonstrate two full years (fall/spring/fall/spring semesters) in attendance at an institution of higher education after high school graduation must reside in Ohio University-owned housing and participate in the associated meal plan. Two full years in attendance must be demonstrated prior to the semester in which a student enrolls to be eligible to reside off campus.

Students can also request an exemption to the residency requirement if certain conditions are met. Please refer to the housing requirement section of this website for more information about housing requirements and the housing exemption review process. Students must be approved to live off campus by the exemption committee prior to signing an off-campus lease.

Students demonstrating two full years of attendance or more at an accredited higher education institution after high school graduation can choose to either live in the residence halls or off campus.

If you have more questions or concerns about housing options, contact Housing and Residence Life by calling or texting 740.593.4090 or emailing housing@ohio.edu .

What is the process for relocated students?

If I am required to reside on campus for the upcoming fall semester, how would I select my room?

Once relocate students are admitted to the Athens campus, a housing contract for the upcoming year must be completed by the deadline listed on our Returning Student Room Selection Process website to be eligible to participate in the room selection process. If the deadline to participate in the selection process has passed, students will be able to select their room in the Returning Student Room Change Process or will be assigned a space by the beginning of August by Housing staff members.

How are room selection dates/times determined?

Room selection dates/times are completely random for the Returning Student Room Selection Process. The decision to randomly assign selection dates/times was recommended by students and endorsed by Student Senate.

Can I change rooms?

For students relocating in the fall semester, there will be a room change opportunity after the initial room selection process ends.  This Room Change Process will remain open until August 1.  For students relocating in the spring semester or making a decision for the fall semester after August 1, a room change process is available during the academic term as well.

The Room Change Process allows students to view available spaces without having to change their current assignment until they pick a room assignment they desire. Once a student selects a new space, their old assignment is then available for any other student looking for new spaces in the Room Change Process.  Once a student selects into a new room, there is no guarantee that their old room will be available for them to return. Students can change rooms as many times as desired throughout the Room Change Process.

What if I chose the wrong room?

For students relocating in the fall semester, your fall semester room assignment will be listed on your Housing Self-Service page and will be sent to your OHIO email account immediately after selecting a room.  For students relocating in the spring semester, your spring semester room assignment will be listed on your Housing Self-Service page and will be sent to your OHIO email account immediately after you have been manually assigned a room.

During the room selection process in March, students who inadvertently selected the wrong room can contact Housing and Residence Life ( housing@ohio.edu ) on the same day to request their selection be cancelled (along with any roommates that were pulled in). Students will be entered back into the selection process and must repeat the process of adding/confirming roommates prior to selecting another room. Please note requesting to be removed and added back into the selection process can take up to 48 business hours and availability of rooms will change once added back in.

Can I hold a space for a friend that is transferring to OHIO?

Unfortunately, spaces cannot be held for students who have not yet been admitted to Ohio University. We recommend that students complete a housing contract as soon as they are admitted to allow for roommate matches if admission happens prior to a room being selected in the room selection process.

Please contact Housing at housing@ohio.edu if you have a friend that is transferring in that you would like to room with.

What resources are available once relocating students have transitioned to the Athens campus?

There are many services and programs available on campus to help relocate students make their transition to the Athens campus. Residential students should direct questions or concerns to the Resident Advisor (RA) within their residence hall. RAs can assist with connecting students with campus resources and with other students.

Additionally, Housing and Residence Life has in-hall professional staff members (Resident Directors, Graduate Resident Directors, and Assistant Resident Directors) who work with all residents to establish a positive living environment and develop a strong community. Please see our staff directory for more information on our in-hall staff.
